What is an inductor
The inductor consists of a coil of conducting material- insulated copper wrapped around a core of a ferrimagnetic material which is called an "iron core" inductor.
An inductor is characterized by its inductance, which is the ratio of voltage to the rate of change of current.

Application of inductors
Inductors are widely used in analog circuits and signal processing. Applications range from the use of large inductors in power supplies, which along with filter capacitors remove multiples of the mains frequency of the DC output (or the switching frequency of a switch-mode power supply), to small inductors of ferrite beads or toris installed around the cable to prevent radio frequency interference in transmission along the wire.In many switching power supplies, the inductor acts as an energy storage device to produce DC current. The inductor powers the circuit, keeps the current flowing during the "off" switch, and makes possible a topology in which the output voltage is higher than the input voltage.
