Description
An incremental encoder is a linear or rotating electromechanical device that has two output signals, A and B, which emit pulses as the device moves. Together, the A and B signals indicate the occurrence and direction of motion. Many incremental encoders have an additional output signal, usually specifying an index or Z, which indicates that the encoder is at a specific reference position. In addition, some encoders provide a status output (usually specifying an alarm) indicating internal fault conditions, such as bearing failure or sensor failure.
